  • History
    • After WWI, athletic matches were held between allied countries’ military personnel
    • After WWII, an athletic organization was created for the winning countries’ military personnel
      • It failed due to cold war tensions
    • CISM is established in February 1948 with 5 founding countries: France, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg.
    • In 1957 Republic Korea is recommended by Greece to become the 21st member state
      • In 1993, North Korea is approved at the 48th general assembly in Bulgaria.
    • 1990: After the fall of communism, the United States, Russia and Western European countries join.
      • The Soviet-centered SKDA (Socialist Allied Armies Sport Committee) was disbanded and its members joined CISM.
      • North Korea (’93), the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland (’91) and other countries (’92-’95) join CISM.
    • As of 2015, there are 133 member nations
  • Competition Events : 25 events such as Taekwondo
    • World Championships : Yearly events hosted in different countries
    • Military World Games : A combined event every 4 years

    • ‘57.1.5 CISM makes a formal request to the Republic Korea embassy
    • ‘57.7.18 The issue of joining CISM is voted on by the 67th cabinet council
      • However, it was rejected by parliament
    • ‘61.2 Republic Korea agrees to join CISM
    Republic Korea agreed to join in 1961, but participated in the general meetings and events starting in 1957. It is often listed as having joined in 1957.
